Wednesdays: Sept. 30, Oct. 7, 14, 21, 28, 2009, 7:00–9:00 p.m.
Presented by: Ron E. Steen, MA
For centuries, in an effort to solidify aspects of spirituality, the Catholic Church has been known for commissioning art that focuses on spirituality, both for devotional purposes and for the education of churches, monasteries, convents, palaces and charitable organizations. This series takes as its point of departure the work of the 16th century artist El Greco (1541-1614). The artist, born in Greece, lived and worked for the majority of his life in Catholic Spain where he created highly spiritualized images within his work for various purposes and locations. Series topics include his art and career, its historical context and the spiritual content depicted in his work, making relevant the period of time and the country in which he worked. This course will deal with spirituality in art as it appeared then, and at the same time will make reference to our more contemporary purposes, concepts and usage of Catholic spirituality in art.

THE GOSPEL OF LUKE: Journey to Jerusalem
Tuesdays: Oct. 20, 27, Nov. 3, 10, 17, 2009, 2:30–3:30 p.m.
Presented by: Christine Hilliard, CSJ
A dominant theme in the Gospel of Luke is that of Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem. His life before the start of this journey both informs and forms his movement toward the Holy City just as his words and actions along the way converge toward his death, resurrection, and ascension. With the aid of the New Collegeville Bible Commentary, this class studies the gospel of Luke in preparation for the upcoming liturgical year when the lectionary gospel readings for Sundays will be taken from the 3rd gospel. This gospel, which gives us the popular parables of the Good Shepherd looking for one lost sheep and the Prodigal Son welcoming back one lost child, strengthens our awareness of God’s forgiving, reconciling nature. Reviewing both the social context and the literary landscape of the Luke’s gospel invites us to hear its “good news” for our lives.

The day concludes with the option of staying for dinner at 5:45 p.m. People of all faiths are welcome.

Third Sunday of the Month: Apr. 18, May 16, 1:30–5:30 p.m.
Presented by: Dan Miller, Ph.D.
The Human and The Holy (H&H) is a gathering of people who are committed to exploring and cultivating the mystical and prophetic dimensions of faith and pursuing together the deeper meanings of Jesus’ invitation to abundant life. Participants agree to come one Sunday afternoon a month, beginning in October and ending in May.

H&H has two primary goals: first, to encourage adult seekers and practitioners of faith to move beyond the basics of religion and to go deeper in their understanding and lived experience of Christian spirituality; second, to create a community of learning and mutual care united by the common desire to listen and respond more fully to the presence of God in their lives and the world today. The day concludes with the option of staying for dinner at 5:45 p.m. People of all faiths are welcome.

This year (2009-2010) our focus will be “PRACTICING RESURRECTION.” Each gathering will include our four characteristic movements: time for silent reflection and prayer, dialogue, content, and ritual action. THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES: Journey Beyond Jerusalem
Tuesdays: Apr. 20, 27, May 4, 11, 18, 2010, 2:30–3:30 p.m.
Presented by: Christine Hilliard, CSJ
The author of the gospel of Luke continues his journey theme as the disciples of Jesus, having been gifted with the Holy Spirit, live the “good news” instilled in them as they journey beyond the confines of Jerusalem. Themes from the gospel reappear in the story of the lives of these women and men as they strive to pass on Christian teaching and ethical life-style. Set literary techniques enhance the message that the Christian community is not a religious club but a viable instrument through which God’s saving grace can be given to and received by the whole world. The Acts of the Apostles, witnessing the on-going reality of Divine Presence in the world, is a fitting successor to Luke’s gospel.

JOHN AUGUST SWANSON: Bringing Our Faith Stories to Life Through Art
Saturday, Apr. 24, 2010
1:30–4:30 p.m. Living Inside a Sacred Universe
5:00–7:30 p.m. Opening the Windows to Paradise

Presented by: John August Swanson, David Hoover, MTS and Sharon Halsey- Hoover, MA
This special event offers a unique opportunity to spend a time of retreat and enrichment with a major spiritual artist of our time. Drawing on the compelling art and wisdom of John August Swanson, we will explore ways of bringing our faith stories to life through art, thus helping us to live inside our sacred universe. Participants will have a chance to explore the artist’s transformative vision and his creative process, and awaken their own hearts to the transformed and childlike divine innocence which the artist points us toward through his art.

Internationally renowned John August Swanson is a Southern California native whose art reflects the strong heritage of storytelling he inherited from his Mexican mother and Swedish father. John Swanson’s narrative is direct and easily understood. He addresses himself to human values, cultural roots, and his quest for self-discovery through visual images. These include Bible stories and social celebrations such as attending the circus, the concert, and the opera. He also tells of everyday existence; all his parables optimistically embrace life and one’s spiritual transformation.

John Swanson studied with Corita Kent at Immaculate Heart College. His unique style is influenced by the imagery of Islamic and medieval miniatures, Russian iconography, the color of Latin American folk art, and the tradition of Mexican muralists. Mr. Swanson’s art is represented in the permanent collections of many museums, including three museums of the Smithsonian Institutions: The National Museum of American History, The National Museum of American Art and The National Air and Space Museum. With holdings of more than 38 works, Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta has acquired the largest collection of Mr. Swanson’s art.
