SCRIPTURE STUDY
Early Christian Correspondence: Letters of the New Testament

Presented by: Christine Hilliard, CSJ
Letters have become their own category of literature in a number of cultures even though the authors may not have intended them for general publication. This correspondence genre gives witness not only to the author, but to the individual or group to whom the letter was sent. We know that Christians made use of such writings to encourage and support their lives of faith within the Greco-Roman world of the 1st and 2nd centuries. Selecting a few of the letters found in the New Testament, this series will explore their social context along with literary and theological elements, while considering their relevance for our time.

Pauline Letters: Galatians and Romans
Tuesdays, Sept. 18 - Oct. 9
The most famous early Christian letter-writer is Paul of Tarsus. There are seven letters in the New Testament considered to be authentically written by him. This session will examine two: the Letter to the Galatians which was addressed to a group of local churches with Paul's personal concern for his converts and the Letter to the Romans which was written to Christians that Paul had not evangelized. $25
7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Location: Center for Spiritual Development

*THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS: In Their Day and In Ours
Saturday, Sept. 22
Presented by: John Endres, SJ
A brief introduction to the Dead Sea Scrolls, including their discovery, the archeology of the site, the publication and interpretation of the texts and their significance. During these sessions you will have the opportunity to focus attention on the texts themselves (by reading all or parts of them) and the important ideas and religious notions connected with them. Participants will learn how these scrolls contribute to our understanding of early Judaism, its ways of interpreting the Hebrew Bible, which also help us to understand important aspects of the New Testament texts and early Christianity. $50 (includes lunch)
9:00 - 4:00 p.m. Location: St. Joseph Center, Mother Louis Room

A SACRED CONVERSATION: An Evening for Evangelical and Mainline Protestants Interested in the Contemplative Life
Thursday, Oct. 11
Presented by: Dan Miller, Ph.D.
We at the Center for Spiritual Development have been blessed by the friendship and participation of many evangelical and mainline Protestant people of faith in our various programs and through spiritual direction. We have listened to your powerful stories of faith and poignant questions. Though these stories are unique and singular, we often hear a common theme: the discovery of and deepening interest in the contemplative dimension of spirituality, in the ongoing journey of the inner way. The purpose of this evening is simply to provide evangelical and mainline Protestant Christians an opportunity and safe place to come together, meet one other, and share this emerging interest or ongoing experience of faith with those from your same tradition. No Fee.

*NON-VIOLENT COMMUNICATION: A Language of Life
Saturday, Oct. 20
Presented by: Joyce Cottage, MA
Most of us have been educated from birth to compete, judge, demand, diagnose - to think and communicate in terms of what is "right" and "wrong" with people (and ourselves). This workshop will be an introduction to Marshall Rosenberg's process of reaching beneath the surface to discover what is alive and vital within us, and how all our actions are based on human needs that we are seeking to meet. When we understand and acknowledge our needs we create a shared basis for a more satisfying relationship - a deeper connection with others and ourselves. Learn how to develop relationships based upon mutual respect, compassion and cooperation. Will you know how to do this completely in this workshop? NO! But you will be hooked into wanting to learn, know and practice more. $50 (includes lunch)
9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Location: St. Joseph Center, Mother Louis Room

THE HUMAN AND THE HOLY: An Invitation to Christian Spirituality
Third Sunday of the Month, Oct. 21, Nov. 18, Dec. 16, Jan. 20, Feb. 17, Mar. 16, April 20, May 18.

Presented by: Dan Miller, Ph.D.
This will be our fifth year of The Human and The Holy (H&H). H&H is a gathering of people who are committed to exploring and cultivating the mystical and prophetic dimensions of faith and pursuing together the deeper meanings of Jesus' invitation to abundant life. Participants agree to come one Sunday afternoon a month, beginning in October and ending in May. Participation in H&H is limited, with most spaces reserved for those taking the full series. Some spaces are reserved for people who are interested in a specific session. Each Sunday concludes with the option of staying for dinner at 5:45 p.m.

H&H has two primary goals: first, to encourage adult seekers and practitioners of faith to move beyond the basics of religion and to go deeper in their understanding and lived experience of Christian spirituality; second, to create a community of learning and mutual care united by the common desire to listen and respond more fully to the presence of God in their lives and the world today. The day concludes with the option of staying for dinner at 5:45 p.m. People of all faiths are welcome.

This year (2007-2008) we will explore the essential dimensions of a spirituality with integrity by concentrating on the works of one remarkable figure: Rabbi Abraham Heschel. As Christians we do this not only in the spirit of interfaith learning and dialogue but also as a way of passing over to another tradition in order to more fully understand and live out the depths of our own. There will be assigned reading between sessions drawn from one primary text, Between God and Man. Copies will be available through the Center at a reduced price. The overarching context for H & H will continue to be the relationship between the contemplative and active dimensions of faith as spelled out in Micah 6:8: "to act justly, to love tenderly, and to walk humbly with our God."

*CONVERSATIONS WITH JOAN CHITTISTER, OSB
Co-sponsored by St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Laguna Beach
Saturday, Nov. 17
Presented by: Joan Chittister, OSB
Many times we come away from a challenging and inspirational talk with the question, ‘how does this apply to me’ – or ‘where do we go from here?’ Our dialogue with Sister Joan will not leave us in that position.

In the morning, she will ground us by unwrapping the power and possibility of the prophets. In “Prophets”, The call and response of six Hebrew Scripture prophets lay the groundwork for this presentation on our own call and response in the world today. As the day unfolds, Joan will help us to see Benedictine spirituality as a way to live prophetically. "Choice Between Impossibles" discusses the seemingly hopeless choice of living in a world where we are forced to choose between two impossibles: ignoring what is versus accepting what is–and doing both of them in the name of God. It suggests that the answer to this conundrum is to begin to look again to the spiritual imagination and wondrous wisdom of the 6th century visionary, Benedict of Nursia. And finally, she will share with us how important these insights can be as we face one of the most troubling issues of our day: women and war. In "Women, Power and Peace" Sister Joan poses five questions on the effects of war and peace, especially on women. She uses references to women in the Hebrew Scriptures, as well as in our contemporary world, to challenge all women and men to become leaders in the universal call to peace and justice for all people.$50, $40 for students and (65+) seniors (includes lunch)

*SHADOW WORK: Ministering to the Inner Outcast
Saturday, Dec. 1
Presented by: Carolyn Foster
Carl Jung's concept of the Shadow is most simply defined as those qualities and tendencies in ourselves of which we are unconscious. The gift of Shadow material is that it contains the key to our wholeness. Our dislike or admiration of others offers us clues to the negative or positive qualities we have but refuse to recognize. It's like a game of hide-and-seek: We think we are playing with the outside world, keeping hidden, when actually we are always revealed, and God seeks us ardently, calling us to accept and minister to the outcast within. As we befriend these disowned parts of ourselves, our ability to offer kindness and compassion to others will increase. This day-long workshop will use writing and group discussion to explore how Shadow Work is a vital part of adult faith formation. Advent is a wonderful time to reflect on the call to wholeness in our hearts and lives. $50 (includes lunch)

Deutero-Pauline Letters: Ephesians, Colossians and 2nd Thessalonians
Tuesdays, Feb. 5 - 26
This session will investigate New Testament letters which were not authored by Paul though they carry his tradition. Most likely they were written by some of his close associates. The need to impart Christian identity and behavior in new life situations prompted them to write letters in his name and focus his theological emphasis into new directions for the well-being of the Church. $25

*EXILES IN BABYLON: Christian Faith in the Modern World
Saturday, Feb. 23
Presented by: Daniel Smith-Christopher, Ph.D.
The Babylonian Exile resulted from the conquest of Jerusalem, fully 600 years before the time of Jesus. In this catastrophic event, many Hebrews were taken as Prisoners of War and resettled in southern Babylonia, in what is today Iraq. A significant Jewish community remained in this land well into the modern period. But rather than being a devastating end to Biblical religion, the exile elicited creative, innovative, and productive years of Biblical writing and religious reflection. By thinking about the Exile, can we make some discoveries for modern Christians thinking about their lives of faith in OUR world? Are we like "exiles in Babylon" in the modern world? If so, what can the Bible teach us? $50 (includes lunch)

SEEKING WHOLENESS: Women Dealing With Abuse of Power in the Catholic Church by Marie Evans Bouclin
Tuesdays, Apr. 8 - 29
Book Guide: MaryAnne Huepper, CSJ
Misuse of power has permeated many communities in today's broken world. In our Roman Catholic Church we struggle as laity and clergy to come to terms in a significant way with the suffering experienced by those abused by clergy as minors. As stories continue to unfold, we find that adult women are another part of the community betrayed through clergy abuse, although their stories are less known. Marie Bouclin's book invites us into women's sacred stories and "provides a model of spirituality and social support aimed at promoting their physical and emotional healing." This book study is an invitation to anyone who desires to be part of the listening, healing, circle of hope. $40 (includes book)

FREE OF CHARGE: Giving & Forgiving In A Culture Stripped of Grace by Miroslav Volf
Wednesdays, May 14 - June 18
Book Guide: Mary Therese Sweeney, CSJ
Miroslav Volf brings a unique perspective to the question of forgiveness and reconciliation. His experience of genocide in his native Croatia and his personal mistreatment by the army causes him to grapple with the most profound challenges of forgiveness. From another perspective, as a Professor of Theology at Yale, he is among the best current scholars who attend to the theology of reconciliation. Despite his scholarly credentials, he wrote the book as a spiritual exercise for himself in which he travels a journey from self-centered to generosity, from personal limits to the infinity of God. Free of Charge was selected by the Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury as the church's official Lent book of 2006. Our thoughtful conversation and attentive listening will lead us into the wealth that this book offers. $60 (includes book)

PRAYING OUR EXPERIENCES WITH ST. THÉRÈSE OF LISIEUX -
6-Day Retreat
A meditative journal-writing retreat, based on the spirituality of Thérèse of Lisieux, the Little Flower

Monday, June 30, 7:30 p.m. - Monday, July 7, 10:00 a.m.
Presented by: Joseph Schmidt, FSC
Founded on the spiritual tradition that prayer is an invitation to know and appreciate ourselves and our life experiences as providential gifts of a gracious God, this retreat provides the theory and practice of meditative journal-writing as a prayer-practice, based on the spirituality of St. Thérèse. St. Thérèse herself used her own experiences as the basis of her reflective writing and prayer and has left us a legacy of spiritual teaching on the benefit of praying our experiences. Her great spiritual challenge to each of us, to the world, and to the church is to live the Gospel mandate of creativity, compassion and nonviolence in the ordinary experiences of life; as well as to bring healing to our past experiences by enfolding them in the awareness of God's providence.

The retreat, conducted in an atmosphere of silence and respect for the personal privacy of each participant's personal faith-journey, offers opportunities for personal reflective journal-writing, sharing through discussions, communal Liturgy and periods of quiet prayer. Participants are requested to bring their own journal materials (pen and book). $395, commuters $220

*IN SEARCH OF RECONCILIATION: Brain Physiology and Artistic Expression -Two Paths to the Same Goal
Saturday, Aug. 9
Presented by: Mary Therese Sweeney, CSJ and MaryAnne Huepper, CSJ
This workshop will combine the science of brain physiology, the insight of art and literature, and the sharing of personal experiences to continue the exploration of reconciliation as an essential path of the human journey.

The morning will be dedicated to exploring the new information about brain physiology and what it contributes to our understanding of how we develop empathy, form social structures, reconcile differences and more. The afternoon will engage us in samples of literature, art, and storytelling - all of which illumine the paths that can lead us toward harmony, understanding of ourselves and others, reconciliation and greater empathy. Often one personal experience, one painting, or one story has become the touchstone that gives meaning and influences the choices for a lifetime. This day will challenge our minds and open our hearts to new possibilities. $50 (includes lunch)
